Second arrest in Douglasdale homicide: Calgary Police

Calgary, Alberta – We have laid first-degree murder charges against a second man in relation to the murder of Chad KOWALCHUK.

On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were called for reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Douglas Ridge Green S.E. After the fire was extinguished, a victim was found deceased inside the home, and was later identified as Chad KOWALCHUK.

Our Homicide Unit investigators have arrested and charged a second man believed to be involved in this homicide. Ronald Leon ABRAHAM, 41, of Calgary, was arrested on Thursday, April 7, 2022, and charged with first-degree murder. ABRAHAM remains in custody and will next appear in court on Friday, April 22.

This arrest is in addition to the arrest of Justin Angus BOUCHER, 30, of Calgary, who has been charged with first-degree murder and arson. BOUCHER will next appear in court on Thursday, April 28.

“We continue to examine evidence related to the murder of Chad Kowalchuk and believe there were a number of people attending his residence in the days prior to the fire,” said Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “This has been an agonizing loss for Chad’s family and friends, and we are asking anyone who has information, or who knows of people who have information, to please come forward.”

Update #3 – Homicide in Douglasdale

We have laid first-degree murder charges against one man in relation to a homicide that occurred in February.

On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were called for reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Douglas Ridge Green S.E. After the fire was extinguished, an individual was found deceased inside the home, and the victim has since been identified as 53-year-old Chad KOWALCHUK.

“This investigation has been extremely complex and has required the coordination of resources from across our Service,” said Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “We continue to investigate the events leading up to the victim’s death and ask anyone who may have information to please contact police.”

Our Homicide Unit investigators arrested Justin Angus BOUCHER, 30, of Calgary, on Friday, March 25, 2022, in relation to this case. BOUCHER has been charged with first-degree murder and arson charges and will next appear in court on Thursday, April 7. The investigation is ongoing.

Update #2 – Suspicious death in Douglasdale

We continue to investigate a suspicious death and fire in the city’s southeast last week and are hoping to speak to four individuals who may have information, and to locate an additional vehicle.

On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were called for reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Douglas Ridge Green S.E. After the fire was extinguished, an individual was found deceased inside the home.

Three people are believed to have information about this incident, and we are asking them to contact police.

Jason JOHNSON, 32, of Calgary, is wanted on unrelated warrants for breach of probation and is described as approximately 5’9” tall, 132 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Sharlee RENNIE, 24, of Calgary, is wanted on unrelated warrants for breach of probation and is described as approximately 5’7” tall, 132 pounds, with black hair and green eyes.

Justin URBAN, 31, is wanted on unrelated Canada-wide warrants for breach of parole and is described as approximately 5’10” tall, 161 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

In addition to searching for a grey 2009 Chevrolet Colorado and a black 2015 Kia Sportage, investigators are looking for a U-Haul cargo van with Arizona license plate AK16398, believed to be associated with this incident, and a woman connected to the U-Haul. The woman is described as approximately 5’ tall, with a slim build, long blonde and brown hair, and brown eyes.

Update – Suspicious death in Douglasdale

We continue to investigate a suspicious death and fire in the southeast community of Douglasdale and are looking to locate two vehicles.

On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were called for reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Douglas Ridge Green S.E. After the fire was extinguished, an individual was found deceased inside the home.

Investigators are working to piece together the events leading up to the fire and are looking to locate two vehicles believed to be associated with the residence. The first vehicle is a grey 2009 Chevrolet Colorado with a LOK Energy Services Inc. company logo on the driver’s side rear quarter panel, and the second is a black 2015 Kia Sportage.

Suspicious death in Douglasdale

Major Crimes and Arson are currently investigating a suspicious fire in the southeast community of Douglasdale, after a body was found in a burned-out residence.

On Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were called for reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Douglas Ridge Green S.E. After the fire was extinguished, an individual was found deceased inside the home.

At this time, given the circumstances surrounding the nature of this event, the death is considered suspicious. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022.

Due to structural concerns caused by the fire, it may take some time to ensure the scene is safe before additional inspection can take place. As a result, no further information is available.
