Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit Charge Edmonton Man In Relation to September 2021 Homicide; “RCMP and Fire Services responded to a vehicle fire near Township Road 530 and Range Road 221 in Strathcona County”

Strathcona County, Alberta – The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes unit has laid a charge of First Degree murder in relation to the homicide of an Edmonton woman in September 2021.

On September 15, 2021, Strathcona County RCMP and Fire Services responded to a vehicle fire near Township Road 530 and Range Road 221 in Strathcona County. Upon extinguishing the fire, human remains were located in the vehicle. An autopsy was conducted on September 17, 2021 and the victim was identified as Vanessa Silva, age 29, of Edmonton.

Following an extensive investigation, 25-year-old Cordell Kennedy from Edmonton was identified as a suspect. On May 6, 2022, members of the RCMP K-Division Major Crimes unit arrested Mr. Kennedy for the murder. He has been charged with one count of First Degree Murder. A Judicial Interim release hearing was held and he has been remanded into custody with a first appearance date of May 11, 2022 in Edmonton.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigate suspicious death

Strathcona County, Alta. – On Sept 15, 2021 at 9:36 p.m., Strathcona County RCMP responded to a vehicle fire near Township Road 530 and Range 221 in Sherwood Park, Alta. Human remains have been located inside the burnt vehicle.

The death has been deemed suspicious and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is now investigating with the assistance from the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit and the Strathcona County RCMP General Investigation Section.

An autopsy has been ordered and will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

In addition, the RCMP is looking for any dash camera footage, or information on suspicious vehicles and/or persons that may have been in the area at that time.
