Police asking consumers in possession of illegal knives to forfeit them; Burin Peninsula RCMP seizes prohibited knives from vendor

Marystown, Newfoundland and Labrador – Burin Peninsula RCMP seized a small quantity of prohibited knives yesterday, May 17, that were being sold by a local vendor in the Peninsula Mall in Marystown. The owner of the business, who fully cooperated with police, was unaware the knives were prohibited and turned the remaining inventory over to police for destruction.

Prohibited knives are included under the Criminal Code of Canada as prohibited weapons. In accordance to the legislation, a prohibited knife is one “that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife”.

Pictures of the knives seized from the local vendor are attached for reference. Anyone who may have purchased one of these knives is asked to turn it over to Burin Peninsula RCMP, or their local police, for destruction. Possession of such a knife is a criminal offence – possession of a prohibited weapon.
