Edmonton Police looking for individuals with information related to downtown homicides

Edmonton, Alberta – Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying individuals who may have valuable information in relation to the investigation of the deaths of Ban Hoang and Hung Trang on May 18, 2022.

Investigators are seeking to speak with any person who attended the premises of Universal Electronics and Video (10557 98 Street) on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022. Investigators are specifically interested to speak with two respective unidentified persons who separately attended this location and then attended the next-door premises of Mildly Chinese Herbal Centre (10551 98 Street) that same day.

Additionally, investigators wish to speak with an unidentified female who approached uniformed officers at 98 Street and 106 Avenue around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022 and notified them of the injured person at the premises of Universal Electronics and Video.

BACKGROUND

May 26, 2022

Edmonton, Alberta – On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, an autopsy completed by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Hung Trang, 64 died of blunt force injuries to the head. The manner of death is homicide.

Justin Bone, 36, has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to Trang’s death.

Background:

On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Downtown officers responded to the report of an aggravated assault in the area of 106 Avenue and 98 Street. When police arrived, witnesses identified the 36-year-old male suspect involved, and he was subsequently taken into custody. Officers located Trang injured on scene and EMS responded, treated, and transported him to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. On Thursday, May 19, 2022, Trang succumbed to his injuries.

Further investigations alerted police to a second scene at 105 Avenue and 98 Street. When officers attended the second scene, another injured male was located. EMS examined the male and pronounced Ban Phuc Hoang deceased on scene.

BACKGROUND

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service’s Homicide Section has charged a male in relation to the deaths of two males that occurred in downtown Edmonton this week.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Downtown officers responded to the report of an aggravated assault in the area of 106 Avenue and 98 Street. When police arrived, witnesses identified the 36-year-old male suspect involved, and he was subsequently taken into custody. Officers located an injured 64-year-old-male on scene and EMS responded, treated, and transported him to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. On Thursday, May 19, 2022, the male succumbed to his injuries.

Further investigations alerted police to a second scene at 105 Avenue and 98 Street. When officers attended the second scene, another injured male was located. EMS examined the 61-year-old male and pronounced him deceased on scene.

Today, Friday, May 20, 2022, an autopsy completed by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Ban Phuc Hoang, 61, died of blunt force injuries to the head and neck. The manner of death is homicide.

Justin Bone, 36, has since been charged with second-degree murder and robbery in relation to Hoang’s death. Bone is also charged with a second count of second-degree murder in relation to the death of the 64-year-old male.

An autopsy on the 64-year-old male has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

Bone was not known to either of the deceased males. Police are not looking for any additional suspects.

An autopsy on the male found at 105 Avenue and 98 Street is scheduled for Friday, May 20, 2022.

Homicide Section Detectives believe the suspect in custody was involved in both incidents; charges are pending.
