Calgary, Alberta – We have taken one man into custody after a Calgary Fire Department member was injured by a fleeing stolen vehicle earlier this afternoon.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., today, Saturday, July 2, 2022, police were called for a report of a single vehicle collision in the 100 block of Bermuda Drive N.W. While rendering assistance at the collision, a CFD firefighter was dragged by the vehicle as the driver and vehicle fled the scene. The firefighter was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Due to the high-risk nature of the suspect’s driving, the Service deployed HAWCS to locate and monitor the vehicle from a safe distance. After locating the vehicle, officers safely took the suspect into custody. Investigators have also confirmed the vehicle was stolen.
“In incidents like these, our priority is always to ensure public safety first,” says Duty Inspector Jeff Pennoyer of the CPS Real Time Operations Centre. “The driver demonstrated little regard for the safety of both the public and our fellow first responders, and as such, we dedicated resources from across the Service to safely resolve this incident.”
The investigation remains ongoing and charges against the driver are pending.
