UPDATE: 20-year-old B.C. man charged with homicide following altercation outside Banff, Alberta drinking establishment

Banff, Alberta – Alberta RCMP Major Crimes continue to investigate the homicide that occurred on Sept. 3, 2022.

John Sproule (20), a resident of Lake Country, B.C., has been charged with second degree murder.

A second suspect was released from police custody without charges, as it was determined he was not directly involved.

No further details will be provided as the investigation is on-going.

Banff, Alberta – Banff RCMP would like to assure the public that there is no immediate danger to the community.

Police acknowledge the concern the general public may have, due to the two recent violent events in Banff. RCMP believe these to be isolated incidents, and that there is no further concern for the safety and security of the general public, including both residents and visitors of Banff.

“Our officers are committed to your safety and protecting our community,” said S/Sgt. Buxton-Carr, Banff Detachment Commander. “Banff RCMP actively patrol the downtown core, including the pedestrian zone, every night to provide a visible deterrent to crime and are available at all times to respond to calls from the public for assistance.”

RCMP are looking to identify and speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident on Sept. 3, 2022, or who has any information about it. BACKGROUND

Banff, Alberta – On Sept. 3, 2022, at approximately 12:09 a.m., Banff RCMP responded to a 911 call advising a male had been stabbed following an altercation outside of a local drinking establishment on Banff Avenue.

Upon arrival, the injured male was located. The 27-year-old male, from Foothills County, Alta, was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased.

Two males were taken into custody at a nearby location.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have taken carriage of this investigation, with the assistance of Banff RCMP and the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit.

RCMP are looking to identify and speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information about it.

Police further advise this incident is not related to a similar one that occurred last month in Banff.
