Bystanders jump into action to save swimmers in distress; one swimmer deceased, one suffers serious injuries

Melmerby Beach, Nova Scotia – Pictou County District RCMP respond to swimmers in distress at Melmerby Beach.

On September 10, 2022, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Pictou County District RCMP, Little Harbour Fire Department, New Glasgow Fire Department and EHS responded to a 911 report of swimmers in distress at a beach on Little Harbour Rd. in Melmerby Beach. RCMP officers learned that a woman became in distress while attempting to rescue a man from the water. Bystanders assisted bringing them both to shore and administered first aid.

The 57-year-old Halifax man was transported to hospital by EHS where he was pronounced deceased. The 64-year-old Halifax woman, who suffered serious injuries, was transported to hospital by EHS.

The investigation is ongoing and being assisted by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office.
