UPDATE: RCMP release details from Sylvan Lake, Alberta incident; “RCMP Police Service Dog Kitzel suffered multiple injuries”

Sylvan Lake, Alberta – On Sept. 21, 2022, Sylvan Lake RCMP were executing a police operation at a residence on Lakeway Boulevard in Sylvan Lake.

Upon entering the home, police were confronted by a suspect who pointed a firearm at officers. RCMP repositioned outside of the home and contained the area. Officers from the RCMP Emergency Response Team, Red Deer Police Dog Services and Innisfail RCMP detachments also attended.

Later in the evening, Emergency Response Team members entered the residence and located the suspect who was subsequently arrested. During the arrest, RCMP Police Service Dog Kitzel suffered multiple injuries and was subsequently taken to an area Emergency Vet Clinic where he underwent surgery. PSD Kitzel is now recovering from the injuries received. The suspect sustained minor injuries for which he was treated at the detachment by EMS.

Officers executed a search warrant on the property and a firearm was located.

The Sylvan Lake RCMP General Investigative Unit has taken carriage of the investigation as well as the investigation relating to the circumstances of this incident continues.

RCMP are unable to provide additional details about this incident.
