Athabasca RCMP respond to airplane crash in the MD of Opportunity

Municipal District of Opportunity, Alberta – On Oct. 17, 2022, at 4:35 p.m., Athabasca RCMP were notified by Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) of a possible downed aircraft. JRCC deployed a helicopter from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold lake to search for the downed plane.

Athabasca RCMP along with EMS and Calling Lake Fire were guided to the crash site by the helicopter pilots. The downed plane and the pilot, an 83-year-old male, were located around 7:30 p.m. The pilot suffered minor physical injuries. The actions of the pilot being able to land the plane safely saved his life. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has taken carriage of the investigation.
