Man charged in connection to threats made at the University of Calgary

Calgary, Alberta – We’ve charged a man who is believed to be responsible for what was initially reported as multiple assaults on campus at the University of Calgary earlier this week. It is believed the same man is also responsible for a sexual assault that occurred earlier the same day downtown.

Just before 2 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, a woman reported to police that she had been walking westbound on Riverfront Avenue S.W., approaching Second Street S.W., when a man approached her from behind and touched her inappropriately without her consent.

Later that same day, at approximately 8:25 p.m., we were called to the University of Calgary campus located at 2500 University Drive N.W., for multiple reports of an unknown man stabbing several people.

Upon arrival, our officers canvassed the campus, and were unable to locate any victims or witnesses to corroborate the incident.

In the hours following the event, more information became available, and our District 3 General Investigations Unit worked with the University of Calgary to investigate the incident, including reviewing CCTV footage, which showed the suspect confronting an individual before fleeing the area prior to police arrival. The individual was not injured.

As a result, Nicklaus Youal EKHUGIE, 41, has been charged with one count of possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of sexual assault.

He will next appear in court on Monday, Oct. 31, 2022.

“This was a team effort by many members in District 1 and District 3 who worked collaboratively with each other and with the University of Calgary staff. Together, we were able to advance this investigation and prevent further risk to Calgarians,” says Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm of the Calgary Police Service District 3 General Investigations Unit.
