UPDATE: 2-month-old infant rushed to hospital in critical condition; “Crimes Against Children Section have charged a 61-year-old man from China with Attempted Murder”

Markham, Ontario – Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Crimes Against Children Section have charged a 61-year-old man from China with Attempted Murder after an infant was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at approximately 2:10 p.m., York Regional Police officers were called to a hotel in the area of Woodbine Avenue and Highway 7 in the City of Markham regarding an injured two-month-old baby.

The infant was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition receiving emergency care.

The accused, a 61-year-old male family member, was arrested at the scene. His identity will not be released to protect the identity of the victim and witnesses.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area to please come forward.

An adult male was arrested at the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Residents in the neighborhood can expect to see an ongoing police presence, however there is no concern for public safety.
