Edmonton Police make arrests in Land Rover theft series; Males from GTA and Calgary charged

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has laid charges against two males in a recent rash of thefts targeting newer Land Rover models.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, the EPS TRAP (Targeted Response to Auto-theft Prevention) team initiated an investigation into a series of Land Rover thefts throughout Edmonton. The suspects had specifically been targeting 2017-2021 Discovery, Range Rover and Sport models and were reportedly using sophisticated technology to defeat the vehicle’s anti-theft systems.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, January 26, 2023, TRAP team members located two Land Rovers that matched the description of two that were recently stolen. As such, police followed the vehicles to a residence in the Wild Rose neighbourhood which led to the arrest of two male suspects. Upon further investigation, a search warrant was obtained for the residence which resulted in the recovery of another stolen vehicle, and information leading to the recovery of a fourth.

Jackson Lake, 20, of the Greater Toronto Area, and Christian Nunez Garcia, 20, of Calgary, are each facing several charges including theft of motor vehicle (x6). Their next court date is Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023. TRAP members are currently looking for a third suspect as well as three outstanding stolen Land Rovers.

“It is an important reminder for vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are left locked,” says Acting Sergeant Jon Benson with the TRAP team.

TRAP officers continue to investigate this series of targeted thefts and encourage anyone with information to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
