Peguis First Nation, Manitoba – On January 29, 2023, at approximately 11:30 pm, Fisher Branch RCMP received a report that a male had been stabbed at a residence in Peguis First Nation. The 53-year-old male was transported to hospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries. The suspect was known to the victim.

Officers began searching for the 46-year-old male suspect. On January 30, 2023, at approximately 4:00 pm, RCMP located the suspect at a residence in Peguis First Nation. The male was in possession of a firearm and barricaded himself inside the residence. The scene was contained and the RCMP Emergency Response Team was called out. Shortly after, officers noticed smoke coming from the residence and saw it was on fire. Fire and EMS were dispatched immediately.
While the local fire department was attempting to put out the blaze, officers located the suspect just outside the residence lying on the ground. He was immediately placed under arrest without incident and treated by EMS on scene. He was then transported to hospital, where he was released shortly after.
Wescott Sutherland is charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Arson, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Further charges may be pending in relation to the firearm.
He remains in custody.
The investigation continues.
