Lethbridge man facing manslaughter charge in connection with death at care facility

Lethbridge, Alberta – Lethbridge Police have charged a 51-year-old male with manslaughter in connection with the death of a fellow resident at a local care facility.

On January 6, 2023 police were notified of the death of 78-year-old Kenneth Hale, a resident at St. Michael’s Health Centre located along the 1400 block of 9 Avenue South. Hale’s body had previously been transported to Alberta Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Calgary and following an autopsy his death was deemed suspicious. A police investigation was initiated and determined Hale had been assaulted by another resident of St. Michael’s Health Centre on December 26, 2022. Hale subsequently died of his injuries on January 3, 2023. The victim and subject were known to one another and resided in the same unit.

On February 21, 2023 police attended St. Michael’s and the subject was arrested without incident.

Wesley Red Young Man, 51, of Lethbridge, is charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault.

Following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Red Young Man was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 23.

No further information will be released.
