Sidney, North Saanich, BC – On February 11, 2023 just before 9:00pm a member of the Sidney / North Saanich RCMP was conducting some proactive speed enforcement on Highway 17 when a speeding vehicle caught their eye.
A white sedan appeared to be traveling well in excess of the posted speed limit of 90km/h. A quick check confirmed that the vehicle was travelling at more than 50km/h over the posted speed limit.
The Sidney/ North Saanich RCMP front line member activated their emergency lights and siren and conducted a traffic stop with the sedan. Through interacting with the driver the officer determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol.
“This driver was not only driving well above the speed limit, but they were impaired as well,” said Sidney/ North Saanich RCMP Detachment Commander Wayne Conley. “It was also determined that they did not hold a valid licence, as it was revoked previously for driving while impaired.”
The Victoria woman was issued a 90-day driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act, and released with a court date related to impaired driving. Criminal charges are anticipated as part of the recommendation process.
“The reckless act, combining speed and alcohol while driving put the public at significant risk and could have resulted in a tragedy, fortunately the driver was apprehended before anyone was hurt,” Conley added.
The vehicle was also impounded for 30 days and driver’s licence re-suspended for 90 days in addition to her violation ticket for excessive speed and driving without a license.
