Garden Hill First Nation, Manitoba – On April 5, 2023, an Island Lake RCMP officer was driving to the Northern Store in Garden Hill First Nation after shift when the officer saw a known male walking in the community and having a heated discussion with another community member. The officer stopped to make sure everything was okay. Upon speaking with the male, the officer learned the male was banned from the community and had drugs on his person.
Preston Kakegamic, 33, was taken into custody. When his vehicle was searched, a sawed off shotgun, six knives, and a large amount of ammunition was located and seized. Kakegamic had four outstanding warrants related to drug charges and was prohibited from possessing firearms.
He has been remanded in custody on firearm-related charges and failing to comply with undertaking conditions. The investigation continues.
