Man injured in shooting on Calgary bus; witnesses sought

Calgary, Alberta – An altercation on a city bus between several individuals believed to be known to each other resulted in bear spray being deployed and one man being shot. Police are asking anyone who may have been on the bus at the time, or was in the area near the bus when it stopped, to call police.

Police were called at approximately 11:40 a.m., to the bus, which was parked in front of the Central Library on Third Street S.E. It is believed the altercation on the bus occurred as the bus was in motion and that the driver stopped the bus when the incident escalated and the shooting occurred. Several bystanders attempted life-saving measures for the injured man, who was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

After the shooting, it is believed that occupants of the bus, including those involved in the altercation, fled the area. Officers were quickly on scene, tracking suspects throughout the downtown. A nearby restaurant was contained and searched after reports that one of the suspects had entered shortly after the incident, however, none were located during the search. Two suspects were taken into custody on Ninth Avenue near Fort Calgary and one person remains outstanding.

We have worked with our partners at Calgary Transit to obtain CCTV and are working to determine if one of the persons in custody was responsible for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

“This is a disappointing development as we ramp up our enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of public spaces in our city. All those who were responsible for the events that lead to such reckless disregard of public safety will be held accountable,” says CPS Superintendent Cliff O’Brien.
