Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Homicide Section has laid charges in the death of an infant.
On Thursday, Apr. 13, 2023, police arrested a 30-year-old female and charged her with second degree murder in the March 11 death of a five-month-old infant girl. The accused is the infant’s mother.

There is one other minor child in the family. The names of both the accused and the deceased are not being released to protect the privacy of that child.
Background
On Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2023, a five-month-old baby girl was admitted to the Stollery Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2023, the EPS Child Protection Section initiated an investigation into the injuries. The infant was declared deceased on Saturday, Mar. 11, 2023.
On Thursday, Mar. 16, 2023, the Edmonton Medical Examiner completed an autopsy and determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma. The manner of death is homicide.
