Richmond, BC – On April 6, 2023, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit officers partnered with City of Richmond Bylaws and Commercial Vehicle Inspectors from Abbotsford Police, Delta Police, Coquitlam RCMP, Metro Vancouver Transit Mobile Enforcement Team, and the New Westminster Police Service.
This multi-partner operation was conducted on No. 6 Road and Commerce Parkway.
A total of 55 commercial vehicles were inspected with 19 of them having significant defects that rendered them out of service. This meant that the vehicles could not be operated on a public roadway until such time as the defects could be remedied. 3 of the commercial vehicles were towed immediately. 79 vehicle defects were identified and 32 charges were laid either under the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations or the Commercial Transportation Act.
Of particular concern by our Road Safety Unit, was the inspection of a landscaping truck and its corresponding trailer. The truck was discovered to have a portion of its metal componentry replaced by plastic. The trailer being towed by the truck had been uninsured since 2012. Furthermore, the operator of the truck was determined to be unlicensed since 2005.
This is a reminder that road safety encompasses many aspects that our community may not be aware of, including that of commercial vehicles that also share our roadways.
