Portage la Prairie, Manitoba – On May 12, 2023, at approximately 11:45 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of an assault on 6th Street NE in Portage la Prairie and that a firearm may be involved. Police attended and spoke to the victim, who had received minor physical injuries.

Investigation determined that a 15-year-old female was walking with another female on 6th Street NE when a male ran towards her, tackled her to the ground, assaulted her and took her phone. The female was able to get away, but the male chased her and again tackled her. This time pointing a firearm at her and threatening her. She was able to get away.
Police patrolled the area and located the suspect hiding in a residence on Yellowquill Trail. Kaden West, 20, was arrested and a loaded makeshift firearm was seized. West is charged with several firearm charges, Assault with Weapon x2, Forcible Confinement, Resist/Obstruct a Peace Officer, and charges related to not complying with release orders and undertakings.
Further investigation determined that West was also involved in a collision with a stolen vehicle earlier in the night. At approximately 10:15 pm, Portage RCMP had received a report of a hit and run at a residence on 7th Avenue NW. It was reported that a SUV rammed into a vehicle parked on the street. A male matching the description of West was seen leaving the scene.
When police arrived, it was determined that the SUV was stolen. West was charged for Driving Without a Licence and Driving Carelessly. The investigation continues.
West remains in custody.
