ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting in northwest Edmonton; suspect carjacked, rammed vehicles

Edmonton, Alberta – At approximately 8:10 p.m. on May 16, 2023, police responded to the report of a white Dodge Ram truck actively smashing into other vehicles in the area of 117 Ave and 102 Street.

Police determined the male driver had been involved in two violent, armed carjackings earlier that evening in Downtown Branch.

When police arrived, the male suspect had exited the vehicle and a confrontation between him and the officers occurred, resulting in one of the officers discharging their service weapon.

The suspect immediately entered the truck and fled the area, becoming involved in another armed carjacking a short distance away. The officers were not injured in the confrontation.

A male matching the suspect’s description was arrested this morning, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, after causing several more collisions and multiple attempted carjackings. He was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons only. The suspect has 17 outstanding warrants.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified of the officer-involved shooting incident and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate.
