UPDATE: Grande Prairie RCMP investigate several suspicious fires

Grande Prairie, Alberta – Grande Prairie RCMP continue to investigate several suspicious fires that occurred in Grande Prairie on the night of May 15 and early morning of May 16, 2023.

Grande Prairie RCMP are also investigating a suspicious fire that occurred in the area of 108 Street and 68 Avenue on May 17, 2023 at approximately 10:30 p.m. The fire was contained and extinguished by Grande Prairie Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

The investigation of a grass fire in the area of 96 Street and 94 Avenue resulted in Evan Bjorklund (34) of no fixed address, being charged with one count of intentionally causing damage by fire to Sunrise Towers (section 434 CC). Following a judicial hearing, Bjorklund was released from custody to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on June 14, 2023.

Grande Prairie RCMP continue to investigate and are asking for the public’s assistance with identifying those responsible for these incidents. Grande Prairie RCMP investigate several suspicious fires

Grande Prairie, Alta. – Grande Prairie RCMP are investigating several suspicious fires that occurred in Grande Prairie.

On May 15, 2023 at 10:08 p.m. RCMP and Grande Prairie Fire responded to a brush fire on the disc golf course in Muskoseepi trails. A male suspect with a black hat and black jacket was seen leaving area southbound on the trail towards 84 Avenue.

On May 15, 2023 at 10:36 p.m. RCMP and Grande Prairie Fire responded to a brush fire in the area of 85 Street and 102 Avenue.

On May 15, 2023 at 11:14 p.m. RCMP and Grande Prairie Fire responded to two brush fires in the area of 108 Street and 117 Avenue.

On May 16, 2023 at 1:05 a.m. RCMP and Grande Prairie Fire responded to a structure fire in the area of 104 Street and 102 Avenue. A shed on a vacant lot had been set on fire.

On May 16, 2023 at 4:09 a.m. RCMP and Grande Prairie Fire responded to a grass fire in the area of 96 Street and 94 Avenue.

All the fires were extinguished and no injuries were reported.

A suspect has been arrested in relation to the grass fire on 96 Street and 94 Avenue. It is early in the investigation and unknown if the occurrences are related.

Grande Prairie RCMP General Investigation section is assisting with the investigation and asking anyone that has video surveillance in any of the areas around the time of the incidents or have information to contact police.
