Leduc, Alberta – The Leduc RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit (LCRU)’s mandate includes proactive patrols to interrupt criminal activity and reduce crime.
On April 27, 2023, Leduc RCMP received a report of a stolen truck from a parking lot on Airport Road in Leduc County, Alta. Following further investigation, LCRU with the assistance of the Edmonton Airport Security Operations Control Centre, determined the truck was stolen on April 24, 2023. A suspect was identified and officers began making efforts to locate and arrest him.
On May 4, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., members of LCRU were making proactive patrols when they observed a truck parked in a parking lot in Leduc Common with a male slouched over the steering wheel. A query of the truck vehicle identification number showed it to be the same truck reported stolen on April 27, 2023.

Members of Leduc RCMP and LCRU arrested Anthony Whitford (30), a resident of Edmonton, Alta. Whitford was charged with:
Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Following a judicial hearing, Whitford was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear in Leduc provincial court on May 25, 2023.
On May 5, 2023 at approximately 1:00 a.m., members of LCRU, were making proactive patrols in Willow Park Estates when an officer observed a truck with a damaged drivers side door. A licence plate query of the truck showed the vehicle had been stolen in Leduc sometime between the evening of May 3 and the morning of May 4, 2023. The driver of the vehicle stopped abruptly in an alley and fled on foot.
LCRU and members of Leduc RCMP made foot patrols with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Services. The driver was located and arrested after he was found hiding in a holiday trailer nearby.
Riley Terry Garrett (27), a residence of Leduc, was arrested and charged with:
Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Fail to comply with release order
Fail to comply with undertaking
Garrett was also charged in relation to the truck stolen report from April 27, 2023 with:
Theft of a motor vehicle
Fail to comply with release order
Fail to comply with undertaking
Following a judicial hearing, Garrett was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Leduc provincial court on June 1, 2023.
“Our Crime Reduction Unit supports frontline police work by conducting targeted enforcement, or “hotspot” patrols, based on crime trend analysis, intelligence and consultation with community leaders,” says Acting Sgt. Penny Penney, Leduc Crime Reduction Unit. “We will continue to target those individuals who create the greatest harm in our communities and hold them accountable for their actions.”
