Fox Creek, Alberta – On May 25, 2023, at 12:15 p.m., officers with RCMP Special Tactical Operations (STO) unit were assisting local Fox Creek RCMP, supporting the re-opening of Fox Creek, when they were alerted to a community member in medical distress.
The hospital in Fox Creek was still in the process of re-opening and Emergency Medical Services was not in the area. Thankfully, one of the STO officers was qualified as an RCMP Emergency Medical Response Team (EMRT) member and attended the needs of the citizen who was in distress. The RCMP officer provided primary care and worked in partnership with a Primary Care Paramedic/ Volunteer Fire Fighter, who also assisted.
EMRT or police medics were created as a result of the 1990 Oka Crisis when local ambulance services would/could not enter the area of conflict leaving RCMP to provide first aid to themselves. Today, EMRT personal can be found all over the RCMP and are provided specialty training in International Trauma Life Support, First Responder, automatic external defibrillation (AED), IV therapy and symptom relief.
RCMP trained in EMRT are often deployed with various Tactical Troops, Emergency Response Teams and other specialized units.
