Arrest made in downtown Calgary shooting following three-month investigation

Calgary, Alberta – Following a three-month investigation, an arrest has been made in relation to a shooting that took place downtown in February 2023.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., a verbal dispute took place between two groups of people in a parking lot, in the 600 block of 10 Avenue S.W. After a physical altercation occurred, an individual fired one shot from a handgun, hitting another individual. The suspects then fled the scene. This was not a random attack, rather a result of the dispute between the two groups escalating. The victim and witnesses were not cooperative with police.

After months of investigation, on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, a search warrant was executed in the 4800 block of Rundlehorn Drive N.E. As a result, 5.7 grams of crack cocaine and 25.1 grams of MDMA were seized from the residence.

Yesterday, Wednesday, May 24, 2023, Aberaham TILAHUN, 19, was arrested in relation to this shooting and is now charged with:

· One count of aggravated assault

· One count of discharge firearm with intent

· One count of transport restricted firearm

· One count possession of weapon dangerous

· One count of carry concealed weapon

· One count of unauthorized possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle

· One count of possession of a loaded restricted firearm

· One count of possession of weapon obtained by crime

· One count of personation with intent to avoid arrest

· Three counts of weapons prohibition order

· Twelve counts of breach of release orders

· One count of possession of cocaine

TILAHUN remains in custody and will next appear on Friday, May 26, 2023.
